Let’s face it, women rule the world plain and simple. If you were to ask my very Caribbean father who rules the world, he’d probably tell you men, but I’m afraid he’d be wrong. Women are the backbone of any household aside from just the traditional cultural views that women are the ones to cook and clean, we play a very big role in a lot of other factors too such as where our children go to school, what homes we want to live in, what will and won’t be purchased, the list goes on. As the world continues to become more modernized the role of women in society continues to grow.
Just look at Michelle Obama, I’m if it was about 50 years ago, she would only be looked at as an ex-president’s wife, but in our society she has made her own name for herself. She’s an author, an advocate for equality & women’s rights, a mentor, a mother, the list of titles goes on. She is a well-respected woman by her own right. Michelle Obama is just one example of women changing the world.
Women are constantly turning the world upside down
When we think of the world, we live in today it is no longer “a man’s world”, it is truly becoming “a woman’s world”. Women are changing the world one day, opinion, and voice at a time. Women are making more and more decisions not just in their households, but also throughout life. Women make the purchase decisions from what we eat, wear, the brands we like or don’t like, the opinions are being made by women and the men in our lives just go along with it.
There was a point in time when the women stayed home with the kids, while the men went to school to get their education and became the breadwinners. That’s not the case for a lot of families anymore. According to Bridget Brennan in “How to be Culturally Relevant To The Women’s Consumer Market”, “women dominate higher education”. Women are the main one’s going to school now and earning their degrees at all levels, opening their own businesses, etc… to become the breadwinners. They are taking care of their loved ones and making the decisions.

We have long fought for equal rights and equal pay, and as time goes by each year we are making new milestones. By dominating higher education and becoming breadwinners, we are now the one’s with the money. Typical cultural factors such as:
· Language barriers due to the lack of education or access
· A women’s “role” in the household/society
· How women are expected to act and be perceived by society
These no longer apply in today’s society, women are constantly breaking barriers and defying what the world “expects” from us.
Women are influencing the world
Michelle Obama isn’t the only woman changing the world just think about Susan B. Anthony who fought for women’s rights; specifically, the right to vote. Rosa Parks, who will forever be known in history for everything she did for not just women’s rights but the rights of people of color. Indira Gandhi, the first female prime minister of India. The list of women changing the world and knocking down cultural barriers is ever-expanding. The different cultural factors that affected consumer behavior no longer have much of an effect on today’s society. We are the ones with the power and the voice now to influence the world.
