Is there really such a thing as a good versus bad survey? How do we know if a survey should be considered good or bad? Is it the questions; the way they’re worded? , the amount of questions? Is it the survey itself? Is it too long or too short? Or not relevant to what the people answering the survey are interested in? the possibilities of what makes a survey good or bad are endless.

As a marketer, or a researcher a good or bad survey can define the outcome of the question you’re seeking. If your survey is “good” then you will be able to connect to or reach your target audience better and hopefully be able to achieve your marketing goals. Now let’s dive a bit deeper what consist of a “good” survey?

What is a Good Survey?

A good survey consists of multiple factors the first factor is the types of questions being asked in a survey. The questions need to be centered around a specific topic or issue and only 1 topic or issue per survey.  The questions need to be interpreted and understood the same way amongst everyone taking the survey. Nothing should be left to interpretation. The questions shouldn’t be overly complex or hard to understand or too long. Just keep them short and sweet to help readers understand.

What isn’t a Good Survey?

A “bad” survey leaves everything up to interpretation. There is no way of getting a definite answer or a way to determine anything due to the responses and questions asked that are open to interpretation. A bad survey asks questions that most people won’t be able to answer or can’t exactly think of so they make up numbers or answers that sound accurate to them. A bad survey is “double-barreled” or asks two questions at once such as “does the clothing store offer low cost AND  high quality items?”.

Let’s Sum It Up

There is a such thing as a “good” or “bad” survey and there’s a lot of ways to tell if a survey is good or bad you just have to know what to look out for. A survey is never just a survey, there’s a lot more that goes on when it comes to making and preparing a survey that we should consider.
